RE: Kingston VS Montana Mountaineer 5th Wheel

I've had several brands with the last two from Keystone. I've never seen the Kingston so I couldn't compare. Keystone service has been great to me after warranty runs out. During warranty, you're at the mercy of the Dealer so choose the Dealer wisely. Beyond that, just go with the one your thinking about (hahaha nobody is on the fence that tight), there is no wrong decision.

RE: Front Legs

I guess you should call a Dealer that just went through an earthquake and ask them how many of the 50 or so fifth wheels they have sitting on the legs out on the lot collapsed.

RE: axles, pin weight, 2500 limits (weight police needed)

I would absolutely take any upgrade option for axles and/or wheels. These things are pretty overloaded anyway, and any upgrade helps with that.

RE: wiring a generator

If your 5er generator prewire included an automatic transfer switch, then you should run a plug in the generator compartment instead of the back. Your portable should be wired in the same as you would an on-board, even though you will be running it from the truck bed.

RE: Weight issue again

I would hope those people who buy big expensive trucks, possibly to keep up with the Jones', can afford them. If the housing market is any indication, I would be wary of having big truck payments right now.I really fail to see any logic tie here, other than just another grumbler. It could be said that perhaps only those folks that would buy a trailer too heavy for thier truck are the same folks that would buy more house than they could afford - but that would be just as much of a stretch in logic.

RE: Dryer Vent Install

I made the cut myself (gulp). I had to come in from both sides because the walls were thicker than the hole saw could handle. I use the core for an insulated cup coaster now :)

RE: fifth airborn pin box

We have the 5th airborne and are happy with it. I am just not a fan of the rubber shear concept (Mor-Ryde) for energy absorbtion, even though that is what my suspension is.

RE: Coleman Roadtrip Grill Questions

I have one and it's not bad. The models of the last year or so were changed to make for an easier clean up. I do use the grill, griddle plate and burner plate all the time so it has proved to be very versatile for our cooking purposes. It's probably not the best "griller" but I do like the options. What did they do to make clean up easier? Mine can be a bear to clean. I agree they are not the best griller, more like a coleman stove.

RE: fireplacesmell

There is some mild smell when new like any electric heater, and it goes away after a few uses. However - there has been trouble with the electrical connections, at least on the Dimple models. To save a catatrophe it wouldn't hurt to pull it out and check the connections on the board before using it.

RE: USA tire for ST235/80R16E

Dave, If you can find an LT tire the right size and load range, they are not restricted to 65 mph. LT is the same as your truck tire. My last 5er actually had LT tires from the factory instead of ST. This one has ST because of the size and load.

RE: King pin tripods

I have had the 3 legged aluminum tripod, and now have the JT front and back stabilizers. I did not understand solid until I installed the stabilizers. The tripod stays home. The biggest problem I had with the tripod is getting it to fit! With a 40' rig, any grade at the campsite can put my pin height way past the upper or lower capabilities of the tripod pretty quick.

RE: USA tire for ST235/80R16E

My guess is that your previous tire may have had a defect, or you experienced a road hazard. It just may be a case of poor maintenance, there are things that we forget about and then it comes back to bite us. We all have to diligently inspect our vehicles a lot better and more often. Everytime you get out at a stop, take a walk around and check the tires / suspension / rock the tires to check the bearings / lights / body condition etc. etc.Actually the previous tire problem was a result of a bad alignment from the factory that tore most of the tire up during transport. It was covered under warranty including alignment, but cash credit for the tire. Mission tires are no longer available. With that, I'm not buying the lack of maintenance thing. I have never seen a group of people more aware of tire maintanance than people pulling trailers. I see expensive tire pressure monitors, heat imaging devices, valve stem indicators, torque wrenches, etc. Other than truckers, I don't think any over the road vehicle gets more tire attention than that, yet by far the number tire failures seem to be disproportionatly pointing at RV trailers. No - I think it may be 10% neglect and about 90% Chinese industry practice and greed of the companies that import them.

RE: USA tire for ST235/80R16E

With all the issues with ST tires, you'd think a company like Michelin would see the opportunity to capture the market with a new line of improved ST/LT 80 series trailer tires in D,E & G load ratings Until then, I'm sure glad we have Maxxis available.Prolonged storage, UV, twisting on non-steering axles, and overloaded rigs, may be the very reasons whey a company like Michelin is happy to leave this market to the Chinese - who knows :E Anyway - yes we have Discount tires everywhere and thank you for that info. I started messing with tire sizes and wheel changes on my last rig to overcome an even bigger problem with Load Range D tires, and all I ended up with was an empty wallet and a brand new set of expensive tires rubbing against the shock towers because of brand new expensive wheels I had to order with the wrong offset. I'm not heading down that road - after all, thats why I bought a new rig. I'll still try for the Gs if I find my wheels will take it, or I'll try these maxxis tires.

Outside TV

Has anyone mounted a retractable flat screen TV in thier basement? I have seen them at the RV show but never noticed how the are attached so that they can swivel to the outside or be stowed out of the way in the basement. I was thinking of a simple 15-19" lightweight LCD.

RE: Freezers & Icemakers

U-Line is the only small refrigerated icemaker we found, and they are a pricey unit ($1K). We opted for the portable icemaker as well ($99) from Home Depot on closeout. It doesn't refrigerate so ice will melt if you leave it in there, but it produces every 7 minutes and will fill our freezer with bagged ice by the end of the day.

RE: Worried about snowload

If the snow starts to build ice underneath after months of snowfall, I might start to worry about the additional stress on tires and suspension, especially because a lot of these rigs are running close to GVWR when fulltiming anyway. However I would never worry about collapse. These things are in all 4 corners of the continent and everywhere in between and I never hear of roof collapse unless a tree falls on it. If your refrig vents through the roof, that would be a critical vent to keep open. For your own comfort, you might want to extend the waste tank vents or just make sure they are cleared of snow. Once those plug, it vents inside.:E

RE: USA tire for ST235/80R16E

I replaced my new OEM mainland china bomb tires with Maxxis ST 16" load range "E" rated tires. Load rating at 80 psi is 3420 lbs. Thanks Fishin2dmax! When I originally looked at Maxxis, I couldn't find that size. I have heard good about Maxxis. If my 8 lug al wheels aren't rated for 110psi, I will give these a serious look.
